“Remember—only bring the necessities!” Betsy called out over the noise of everyone digging through bags. Betsy, who had become the unofficial leader of this trip, was put in charge of food and water. They were down to a single bottle of water to share between them, but Kendell and Betsy were both hopeful that they would locate the watering hole early that morning.

A slight scuffle of mostly words broke out when Joe tried to put his camera in his backpack, wasting space. Mika was the one most perturbed by this. “You’re the only man here, and you’re obviously stronger than all of us. You can’t be wasting space in your bag with a stupid camera.”

Abby perked up. “This is our livelihood,” she argued. “We need the camera.”

“You really don’t,” Tonya said. “Plus, it’s getting on everyone else’s nerves. We need that large bag to carry rolled up tents.”

“Fine,” Joe said, and Abby looked mortified. “I’ll use the bag for materials we might need, but I’m still bringing the camera. I’ll just carry it if that makes you all feel better. I can carry it. If I get too tired to carry it, I’ll ditch it.”

Abby looked mortified by that as well. “You can’t ditch that in the middle of the outback. Think of all the footage we’ve gotten.”

“Are you for real?” Mika asked.

“This is my job, so yeah, I’m for real,” Abby said. “This is going to be a good story, and I’m right in the middle of it. That’s gold to people like me.”

“Okay, everyone, that’s enough,” Betsy insisted. “Joe, if you want to carry it, you can carry it, but they’re right. You’re the biggest one we got, and you’re going to carry a fair load of supplies. Let’s get going.”

“Do you even know where to go?” Mika asked. “I’m starting to feel like we’re going to be walking in circles again. That’s what we’ve been doing since we left our campsite, at least.”

“We haven’t been going in circles,” Betsy argued. “And I’ve got a map now. I was able to pinpoint about where we are, and I believe there is a large watering hole not too far from here. If we can get there, we can cool down, take some time to boil some water, and I am confident I can get us to Uluru from there.”

“What happens if we miss it because you’re off by a few miles?” Abby asked.

Betsy nervously tugged at her shirt collar. “Well, we could wind up walking right past Uluru and end up lost in the outback, if I’m being honest.”

“Perfect,” Abby snarled.

“Hey!” Kendell called over the group. “Guys, Betsy is doing the best that she can, okay? I don’t see any of you coming up with any better ideas. So, let’s get going. We’re behind you, Betsy.”

Betsy smiled. “Thanks, Kendell,” she said, and after checking her compass and map one last time, they began walking.

Pauline was given a light load to carry, and Dot walked right beside her, panting most of the way.
